Rug Qualities.
Hand Woven.
This quality is weaved on specialized loom, weaved similar as the fabric does. Usually the pile is smooth or Berber. There are of course new trends, combining both styles that is called cut and loop. With cuts or shaves, depending on the design. Colorful yarns are used and intricate designs and patterns can be created following specific patrons. This rug quality can be delayed due to its intricate and complexity procedure.
Hand Knotted
This quality is weaved firstly horizontally and switches to a vertical weave made by very tight knots. For a Hand knotted rug to be made it takes three workers on a wooden loom up to three months depending the rug design. This method a traditional oriental from Nepal and Kashmir. Dry cleaning is recommended for this rug quality due to the natural herbal dyes.
Hand Tufted
This quality is weaved with a specialized tool a needle gun. The worker threads the yarn with the needle gun on "canvas" surface, which usually is fabric from the same yarn as the rug, using various colored yarns on a patron based on the rug design. At the end the backside of the rug the coating is placed with a very strong natural glue, then it is left to be dried for as long as it takes. On this quality usually are used Woolen and Acrylic yarns. This quality is the most popular and known method of rug weaving. Dry cleaning is recommended for this rug quality.
Flatweave
This quality is nearly flat, is weave with a cluster of vertical and horizontal yarns. The best known rugs of that quality are the Kilims.
Machine Rugs (Carpets)
This quality is weaved in large integrated units in countries with tradition in machine carpets as Belgium, Egypt and Turkey. The quantity of carpets that can be weaved from an automated machine loom can be very big in a grand variety of designs and colors. Due to the low cost of production of these carpets their price is very affordable. Also a huge plus for the machine weaved carpets is that they can be washed domestically, without having to use professional help for their cleaning.
Moquettes.
Moquettes are commonly produced with a maximum width of 4m in Europe and 4,6m for the USA. Moquettes can cover an entire room or bigger areas such as conference rooms, referred to as "wall-to-wall"
Moquettes also can be used as a carpets. Can be cutted and edged at the ends, to common carpet dimensions. Moquettes have evolved a lot and come in several qualities Shaggy, Smooth, Embossed and Berber .
YARNS
A rug, carpet, or Moquettes can be made from one or multiple threads either natural or synthetic. The yarns are selected based on the strength, appearance and ease of construction.
Heatset
Polypropylene is also known as (Heatset) used for the production of carpet yarn because it's durable and economical. Usually it is used for shaggy, frisse and loop carpets. The carpets of polypropylene yarn is extremely durable and resistant and therefore used in professional areas. Also this yarn do not stain easily, because as the material do not absorb any kind of moisture.
Wool
Woolen yarns are extremely durable, easily to dye and is a natural product. The strength of the yarn can grow much more if it is added synthetic yarns. Rugs and carpets produced by woolen yarns have soft and rich texture and is usually chosen by major design firms. Woolen rugs and carpets can warm spaces and the only disadvantage is having lints coming off, which stops slowly depending on use.
Polyester
The polyester yarn is commonly referred to as Art Silk, because of the natural shine. And it is used to produce carpet yarns because they are durable. Usually it is used for shaggy carpets. Also, these yarns do not stain easily, because as the material do not absorb any kind of moisture.
Acrylic
Acrylic yarn is a synthetic material that was first created in 1941, but since then it has evolved a lot. It is widely used because it is very durable. It is used for either handmade rugs or machine rugs. Also used for children's rugs, because the nature is anti allergenic. It can also mimic easily the woolen yarn, with a simple process, is used as an economical substitute for woolen yarn.
Knots density
Density of knots can be used as a grade for a rug quality. The more dens the better quality of a rug. The knots of a medium machine carpet ranges around to 500,000 knots/m2, while a very good carpet reaches from 1,000,000 up to 1,200,000 knots/m2. Handmade rugs I.e. handknotted, of course, should be excluded from this type of grade, due the particularity, the difficulty and the elaborate method of weaving. An average experienced worker weaving condition can reach the 10,000 knots per day..
